Colonialism had many positives and negatives. The time during the 19th century and early 20th century is widely regarded as a very bad time for native Africans, with much of their land being taken away and massive deaths due to disease. However, after the Statute of Westminster, the British colonies received greater autonomy and essentially became similar to modern Australia. Also, especially in the British colonies there was an enormous level of implementation of infrastructure and services (such as health and education). The colonists also helped to establish modern countries. After the establishment of republics, the continent descended into chaos, with many dodgy dictators, as opposed to the stable, democratic Africa of the post-Statute of Westminster pre-Republic period.
It is proposed that the post- Statute of Westminster pre- republic period should be accepted as the best time in (former British) Africa's history.
