Writers discovered creative ways of using words to create images. As early as the medieval era the Anglo-Saxon poet who created the famous poem Beowulf played with language. He used kennings - a compound word used figuratively (metaphorically) - to replace a single word. E.g. a sword was referred to as a ‘death-bringer’ or ‘wound-maker’, and a ship was an ‘ocean-stallion’. They were originally used as synonyms. The following poem uses kennings to create an effective image of an owl:
Night flyer,
Mouse eater,
Silent swooper,
Head twister,
Taloned taker.
Your team’s challenge is to create a Kenning poem of 5 lines for ONE of the following objects:
The sun
The wind
The rain
A storm
The ocean.
