Narcolepsy, falling asleep with no warning, having hallucinations when falling asleep and waking up, and at the same time, being paralysed. Could you live like this? It mightn't be a deadly and common disease, but it can affect all of us. Would you want narcolepsy? Perhaps whilst driving? Or operating a mechanical machine? What about at school or work? Long-story-short, narcolepsy is a risk to all of us.
This was first recognised in France back in the 1850's when a young boy dragged his father in, whilst he was asleep, to a doctor. He explained his dad fell asleep without any symptoms or warning preceding the sleeping, and he could fall asleep as much as 200 times a day!
Since then, everyone who observed the disease that affects the nervous system has been unable to link it to any cause. It is linked usually with genes or can occur in specific or demented genes. Scientists have been able to link it to a lack of protein, a form that is produced in the brain. Surprisingly, the cause is unknown.
With many hundreds studying the disease to help prevent future disasters, not much success has brought through. We, as a global community, should work to help prevent the disease for future children.
